Benevento.

He accompanied the two brothers, one of whom was in poor health, outside on a balcony. He kept them safe from the smoke that had already invaded the second floor of his house. So he decided to go back, probably to try to go downstairs, where the fire had started, and sound the alarm. Patrizia, 49, of Dugenta, sadly died in that room, probably – it will be the forensic examinations to establish exactly this – dead from smoking.

These are the traces of the tragedy that occurred last night in via Mercato in Dugenta where a fire broke out inside the house where the 49-year-old girl and her brothers, all retired, lived.

Patrizia did not hesitate to approach them to take them to that balcony where they waited for help that was triggered by a phone call to 115 that arrived around 4.25 am. It was done by another of the brothers who had realized what was happening and had rushed out of her house. The man was waiting for firefighters and ambulances at the entrance to via Mercato.

Firefighters had to force an iron gate into the house, too much hustle and bustle to find the keys. They were opened after using self-contained breathing apparatus and compressed air cylinders. The first floor was invaded by flames, probably due to an electrical short circuit in the kitchen. Groping and with torches they made their way. They went up to the first floor where they found the woman lying on the floor. The 118 health workers tried to revive her. All useless unfortunately. Patrizia did not make it. Her siblings waited for rescuers on the balcony and were later entrusted to the care of 118.

Scenes of despair among relatives and neighbors upon hearing the very sad news of Patrizia’s death. The family dog recovered by firefighters from another room in the house was unharmed.

Investigations and reconnaissance carried out by firefighters and carabinieri will now have to return the exact dynamics of the tragic accident. “A drama, a tragedy” commented the mayor of Dugenta, Clemente Di Cerbo came through Mercato. “Now we will find accommodation for the two brothers who were left alone. Our community is shocked and clinging to the pain of this family hit by such great drama.
