A tsunami is expected in New Zealand following the violent earthquake that struck New Caledonia around 2:20 pm Italian time Wednesday. The magnitude of 7.7. The authorities have urged the population to move away from the coasts. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (Emsc), the epicenter was located 424 kilometers east of the city of Tadine, at a depth of ten kilometers. The alarms come from various sectors. The US tsunami warning system has said that an alarm has also been issued for American Samoa and that there is a risk of tsunamis on the islands of Vanuatu, Fiji, and indeed New Zealand. The earthquake waves were concentrated between New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific, and the Loyaut Islands that lie off the east coast of New Caledonia.
Confirmed tsunami
Minutes after New Zealand authorities issued the alert, the Australian Meteorological Office confirmed that the South Pacific earthquake generated a tsunami. Note: Tsunami confirmed, a tweet reads a warning of a threat to Lord Howe Island, which is about 550 kilometers (340 miles) east of the Australian mainland.
Possible dangerous waves within three hours.
The earthquake, initially registered by the Usgs with a magnitude of 7.5, before being revised to 7.7, occurred shortly after local midnight (14.20 in Europe). Dangerous tsunami waves are possible in the next three hours, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned. Waves of up to one meter may occur on some coasts of Fiji, New Zealand and Vanuatu. Smaller waves are also expected off the coasts of Australia, the Cook Islands and American Samoa. There have been no reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake to date. In the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide, seismic and volcanic activities are frequent.
