AGI – Moments of fear in the Marmolada, where a large avalanche broke out on the Trentino side, destroying the Pian dei Fiacconi refuge at 2,626 meters and an elevator in the area of the Fedaia pass. No people involved, the shelter is closed.
The manager realized this morning that the structure had been buried and badly damaged by the mass of snow. The avalanche, which most likely fell yesterday, had a front of almost 600 meters. The Alta Val di Fassa alpine rescue intervened at the scene with the help of the helicopter.
“Half of the shelter is destroyed and the other half is going to be demolished because the whole structure has collapsed with the walls displaced ten centimeters towards the valley, the roof broken, the rooms and the pantry are gone: 20 years of life thrown away “. Thus, in a video sent to AGI, Guido Trevisan, manager of the historic Pian dei Fiacconi refuge in La Marmolada, destroyed by a large avalanche that fell yesterday afternoon.
This morning the manager went to the shelter and found the building badly damaged. Fortunately, the refuge located 2,626 meters on the Trentino side of the Marmolada massif, which is also the upper station of the chairlift, was closed. “The avalanche started from Punta Penia and took the shelter in its entirety by uncovering the rooms and crossing the corridor.“Trevisan added.
The avalanche, according to the men of the Alta Val di Fassa Alpine Rescue, who came up by helicopter to carry out the inspection, had a front of almost 600 meters. The mass of snow that fortunately did not involve people fell off between Punta Rocca and Punta Penia.
The rescuers’ intervention had already started yesterday and was aimed at checking the people involved, or checking the cars in the parking lot downstream. However, the missing persons were not reported to the police. This morning at dawn the rescue team returned to the indicated place.
