Angelo, all over The Cobra. A child from Guglionesi, a father, a husband, a friend. It is impossible, in these parts, not to associate his face and his smile with that particular nickname. Since Angelo knew how to laugh, he always had a ready joke and a pat on the back of encouragement. He left today, October 21, leaving his family and community in pain and speechless. What words can there be for the death of a 40-year-old man who was overflowing with vitality from every pore, in love with joy and music, with the console behind which he made children and adults dance and have fun?
There are no words that are enough to express the mourning of Guglionesi, who once again witnesses the loss of one of her strong little sons, but conquered by an evil that does not make distinctions or preferences, that overwhelms stocks and distorts hopes. In social networks, where the news bounces back with the force of a slap, messages of condolences follow each other. And remember. And photographs of when, until not long ago, Angelo was in the company of many people, with his inevitable smile printed on his face and good eyes, a serene look. Then came the disease, which in a short time ate away strength and hope. Not long ago the same thing happened to a 44-year-old father of 3 children. And even before that, a 40-year-old, a 47-year-old, other people under the age of 50.
A list of names that has the flavor of an inexorable slaughter. All premature deaths caused by cancer, progressing through mortality registries with increasing frequency.
The population continues to question the reason for these tragedies. Ask ourselves if there are environmental risk factors, cause-effect links. But Cancer Registry, whose process began more than 10 years ago, is not yet operational. The system for collecting health and personal data on cancer cases in the region, created for the purpose of study and scientific research, could provide answers, or at least indications. But for now it is confined to “good intentions” because it has not yet been translated into an active tool.
The Covid emergency, which for nearly nine months has kept local healthcare tied to a single priority, has slowed its path further. However, it is the tumor, more than Covid, that is scary, to awaken its specter of despair and helplessness among the population of Lower Molise, where there is a strong feeling that the victims of incurable diseases are more numerous than elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Angelo has gone into that void, accompanied by a gigantic why that casts its black shadow over the town. One reason no one can answer.
