Disinfect, disinfect, disinfect – a lot is said about it, but what should we do at home? What products to use? Also, are they safe? Let us try to clarify, starting with the term: for domestic operations, it is better to talk about disinfection and leave the word sanitization to the hospital and health sector. And remember that the goal of “home” disinfection is not to kill all bacteria in every corner of the house, also because it would be a task that is not only impossible but even futile: it takes only a moment to have new ones (since they are not we are in the operating room).
Instead, what you need to do is take into account the chain of transmission of the contaminated (which in the case of coronavirus is transmitted by aerosol, the now famous ‘droplets’) and operate there. In short, you need specific hygiene and manufactured with the right products. According to experts from Federchimica – Assocasa, for riskier surfaces (telephones, keyboards, door handles) it is good to use disinfectants, very well those based on alcohol.
For less risky areas, normal cleaning is sufficient, and common detergent is sufficient here, preferably chlorine-based flooring. For sanitary surfaces, especially if there are patients at home or risk factors, choose chlorine-based disinfectants. An alternative to bleach is hydrogen peroxide.
If we talk about disinfection, it goes without saying that a disinfectant should be used: they are products subject to ministerial authorization, the number of which is shown on the label. They can be found in any supermarket and to locate them faster, the wording is sufficient: it is called a disinfectant only if it has been authorized by the ministry (a disinfectant is not a disinfectant). They are safe products that do not present problems if they are used according to the instructions on the label. And then, they should always be kept out of the reach of children, a recommendation that is always valid, but even more so now that children, closed schools, are always at home.
Hygiene, cleaning, disinfection. To clarify the words is the Federchimica blog “Fatti, not false!”. Let’s start with the concept of hygiene: hygiene is the practice through which people maintain or promote good health. Keeping yourself and your environment clean, cleaning and, when necessary, disinfecting surfaces, hands, tools and objects for personal use to interrupt the chain of contamination all contribute to hygiene. Hygiene plays a fundamental role in daily life and the period of health emergency that we are experiencing highlights its importance not only for the protection of our health, but, indirectly, also for the national health system, reserving interventions only for cases really serious.
