The result is the worst qualification in the world championship for the nine-time world champion, never shot like that from the bottom of the grid. The lowest point had already been reached in 2018, when Rossi started 18th at the start of the Aragon GP. The Italian started from 18th place also at the 2006 Dutch Grand Prix, but that time was affected by a wrist injury.
To find a worse result we have to go back to the infamous Valencia race of 2015, when 46 came last after the Sepang events, and to Qatar 2004, a race in which the Yamaha rider started 23rd after a penalty.
Valentino had never done so badly in qualifying, even back in the Ducati era, when he posted his lowest point starting second to last at the 2011 German Grand Prix.
Now it will take all of Rossi’s experience and tenacity to return to the top after another dark moment of a glorious and never-ending career., but that runs the risk of ending up in the slums of the rankings.
