The Lega Serie A has transferred the television rights of the championship for the triennium 2021-2024 to the online streaming platform Dazn, with the favorable votes of sixteen clubs compared to only four against (Genoa, Crotone, Sampdoria and Sassuolo). Thus, starting next season, Dazn will be able to broadcast all the matches of each day, seven of which are exclusive and the remaining three are non-exclusive, for about 840 million euros per year. The third and last “package” of television rights for sale has not yet been transferred: it allows the transmission of the three games without exclusivity and, according to the latest news, could be acquired by Sky for 70 million euros.
For Italian football, the sale of television rights is one of the most important moments off the pitch, as it represents its main source of income: in the last three years the League – and consequently the clubs – has received € 973 million per season from Sky and Dazn, who will reverse their roles from next season, with Dazn as the new main announcer in collaboration with Tim, their strategic partner.
For the three-year period 2021-2014, Sky has already secured the rights to 121 of the 137 annual Champions League matches, all Europa League matches and also the new continental competition, the Europa Conference League, for a total of 403 games. The other rights to the European Cup have been acquired by Mediaset (which will have one free game per week) and by Amazon, which has ensured the transmission of the sixteen best matches on Wednesday nights through Prime Video.
