(ANSA) – NIAMEY, MARCH 22 – The attacks carried out yesterday by armed men in the villages of the Tahoua region in Niger caused 137 deaths. The government announced this on Monday. The number of victims makes these attacks the worst jihadist massacre ever committed in Niger. Gunmen arrived on motorcycles and attacked three villages near the Malian border, shooting “at anything that moves,” a local official said. “By systematically targeting civilian populations, these armed bandits have taken another step towards horror and brutality,” government spokesman Zakaria Abdourahamane said in a statement on public television. The government has declared three days of national mourning. The poorest nation in the world, according to the United Nations development rankings, is also forced to fight back with attacks by jihadists from Mali and Nigeria. (HANDLE).
