On March 1, the government appointed General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo as the new Extraordinary Commissioner for the Covid-19 emergency in place of Domenico Arcuri, who has held the position since the start of the pandemic.
Figliuolo was born in Potenza, Basilicata, on July 11, 1961 and has been the Army Logistics Commander since 2018. Replacing Arcuri, Figliuolo will have responsibility “for the implementation and coordination of the measures necessary for the containment and contrast of the epidemiological emergency “, and in particular on the organization of the vaccination campaign, managed partly by the commissioner and partly by the regions. As the Army Logistics Commander, Figliuolo has already held important positions in managing the coronavirus pandemic over the past year.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the Logistics Command was precisely in charge of “identifying and managing the human and material resources to be deployed in the fight against the pandemic.” Figliuolo had taken care of the return of the Italians from Wuhan, China, who were housed in a military center south of Rome that was adapted to allow them to remain in quarantine, and with the supply of masks and gloves.
He had managed the “IGEA” operation, adding 200 points Dcross throughout Italy, where it was possible to clean the coronavirus inside your car. It had also contributed to the start-up of two centers dedicated to patients infected by the coronavirus, the one in Rome at the Celio military polyclinic, and the one at the Milan military hospital.

In recent weeks there has been much talk of a possible replacement for Arcuri, since Prime Minister Mario Draghi had implicitly criticized the organization of the vaccination campaign, in particular the famous primrose pavilions, sought by Arcuri.
Several parties of the new majority, and in particular Lega and Italia Viva, had explicitly requested the dismissal of Arcuri, whose management of the commissioner structure had been harshly criticized in various circumstances. The charges against him escalated last fall when he was also assigned responsibility for vaccine management, as well as responsibility for the rest of the health response to the pandemic.
