The Council of Ministers has appointed Franco Gabrielli as Undersecretary of the Prime Minister. Mario Draghi, head of the government, has entrusted the intelligence delegation to the chief of police. Born in Viareggio on February 13, 1960, Gabrielli graduated in Law from the University of Pisa and in May 1985 he joined the State Police after passing the public competition, with the qualification of deputy commissioner on trial. After passing the course at the Istituto Superiore di Polizia, he is assigned to the VI Mobile Department of Genoa. From January 1987 to August 1990, he moved to the Imperia Police Headquarters as director of Digos first and, later, chief of staff, participating in the investigations that led to the dismantling of the Br-Ucc.

From August 1990 to November 1996, he was appointed to the Florence police headquarters, directing the Digos Anti-Terrorist Section, coordinating investigations related to subversion and mafia massacres in the spring-summer of 1993, collaborating with Magistrate Gabriele Chelazzi. As of December 1996 he moved to Rome to occupy the position of Chief of Staff of the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police. In May 2004, he went to the Central Directorate of the Prevention Police, with the title of Ministerial Deputy Counselor, taking charge of the organization of the nascent Commission for Strategic Antiterrorist Analysis. In the summer of 2005, as director of the Central Counter-Terrorism Service, he collaborated in the investigations that led to the capture in Italy of one of the perpetrators of the London Underground attacks. Appointed prefect on December 16, 2006, he was called to direct the Sisde and later, after the reform of the Information Services, Aisi.

On April 6, 2009, after the earthquake that devastated the capital of Abruzzo, he was appointed prefect of L’Aquila and deputy commissioner for the seismic emergency. In that position, he will also manage the security of the G8 Summit held in that city in the summer of 2009. In May 2010 he assumed the position of Deputy Head of the Civil Protection Department, from which he became Head of Department, managing emergencies seismic events in the Po Valley and the procedures for the recovery and safety of the Costa Concordia, after the shipwreck in the winter of 2012. On April 3, 2015, he was appointed prefect of Rome. The Council of Ministers of April 29, 2016 appointed him Chief of Police-Director General of Public Security.
