Etna throws incandescent bombs

CATANIA – Etna doesn’t stop. The Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reports that after the end of the activity between 4.30 and 5.15 this morning, a score of very violent explosions were recorded from different vents in the Southeast crater, which launched incandescent bombs.

Immediately afterwards, no eruptive activity took place in the crater while the explosive activity observed in recent days continues from the other craters on the summit.

In the hours following the lava fountains and up to now, the mean amplitude of the volcanic tremor has remained mostly confined to the mean level. Between 4.20 and 5.10, on the other hand, the mean amplitude of the seismic signal suffered a temporary and significant increase caused “by a series of very energetic explosive episodes that generated infrasonic signals of very high amplitude.”

Immediately afterwards, the source of the volcanic tremor was located below the summit area, between the Bocca Nuova and Voragine craters, at a depth between 2,700 and 2,900 meters above sea level.

Infrasonic activity, at this time, is very weak. The results of laboratory analysis indicate that the composition of the magma of the products erupted during the lava fountain of February 19 is similar to that of the sources of February 16 and 18, and remains among the most primitive of paroxysmal activity. from the south. crater East of the last 20 years.

During the night there was still a spectacle, with lava jets 800-1000 meters high. An eruptive column rose into the sky for several kilometers above the summit. Show that after another violent and spectacular paroxysmal phase it ended around 2 o’clock.

“Last night we witnessed what was undoubtedly one of the most intense and magnificent paroxysms of the southeastern crater of Etna – wrote the volcanologist Boris Behncke on social networks -. Thanks to the very weak wind, the radioactive fallout from the pyroclastic material will be extremely limited this time. Some seem to think that the main lava flow, in the Valle del Bove, has reached very low, but it is not like that, it has reached the place where those of the previous paroxysms stopped, far from the populated areas. So please, there is no scaremongering, there is no danger ”.

Etna in full explosive activity and with snow was also admired this morning from the Aeolian Islands. A show within a show. The volcano is clearly visible in Lipari from the Quattrocchi viewpoint, where legend has it that two eyes are not enough for how beautiful the view is because you have to go as a couple.

The photos taken this morning show in the foreground the mounds of Petra Minalda and Petru Luongu, the great naturalistic attraction where the “wedding” ceremony is renewed every year in September, and in the background the whitewashed Etna.
