Saudi activist for women’s rights Loujain Al-Hathloul was released. This was reported by his family, however explaining that Loujain Al-Hathloul “is not free”, and that he will have to comply with various restrictions, including a ban on leaving Saudi Arabia for the next five years.

Al-Hathloul, 31, was arrested in 2018 for her campaign against a ban on driving for women in Saudi Arabia on a terrorism charge. On December 28, she was sentenced to 5 years and 8 months in prison. Subsequently, part of the sentence was suspended.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations had called for his release and documented the torture and sexual violence that Al-Hathloul had suffered since the beginning of his detention. A few weeks after her arrest, the ban on driving for women in Saudi Arabia was formally lifted.
