SESTRIERE (TURIN). Carlo Alberto Cimenti, known as Cala, was a legend of mountaineering. He died this afternoon, overwhelmed by an avalanche in the Sestriere mountains (Turin). In 2019 Cala had reached the top of the ninth highest peak in the world: Nanga Parbat, in the Pakistani Karakoram. It is one of the most dangerous peaks on the planet. At 45, Cala was one of the most recognized professional mountaineers in the world. He has always been involved in freeriding for the Prali area.
The signal of his arva was located at the bottom of the avalanche that broke off in the area of the Cima del Bosco and Col Chalvet, the great ravine that descends towards the Argentera Valley.
The alarm was raised by family members who were concerned that they had not seen them return from the ski excursion. For hours in the area of the avalanche, dozens of volunteers from the Alpine Rescue and the Financial Police worked with the Sestriere carabinieri, transported overhead by an air ambulance 118.
From a first survey carried out from the valley with binoculars, the great snowfall was evident in the Cima del Bosco and Col Chalvet area, on the border between the municipalities of Cesana and Sauze di Cesana.
