Coronavirus, the latest news
So how is the pandemic going in Italy? Not very well, on the contrary: according to the independent monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation in the week of December 29, 2020 – January 5, 2021 there is an increase in new cases (114,132 vs 90,117) and in the ratio of positive / tested cases ( 30.4% vs 26.2%). Currently, positive cases remain stable (569,161 vs 568,728) while, in the hospital setting, there are slight fluctuations in hospitalizations with symptoms (23,395 vs 23,662) and in intensive care (2,569 vs 2,549); deaths are rising again (3,300 vs. 3,187).
And abroad? It’s red alert on Germany where the confinement will also be extended for the 26,391 diagnoses and 1,070 deaths registered in the last 24 hours. In UK in which the “Stay at home” will run until mid-February is controversial over the decision to postpone the administration of the second dose of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine for up to three months and even use a vaccine produced by another pharmaceutical company developed with a different technology. A solution to cope with the sudden increase in infections and the low contextual availability of vaccines. A “mix-and-match” that goes against the indications for which the vaccine guarantees immunization only after the inoculation of the second dose. Although Germany and Denmark are also considering whether to follow the UK’s lead, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has specified that the vaccine developed by Pfizer / BioNTech has been approved for emergency use on the basis of two administered doses. within 21 days and therefore “any change would require a new authorization.” In addition to the risk of incomplete immunization, according to several experts cited by Blue suitcase extending the interval between the first and second doses could increase the risk of new coronavirus vaccine-resistant mutations.
