The number of new cases of coronavirus diagnosed in Sicily in the last 24 hours has once again exceeded a thousand. According to data from the Ministry of Health, 1,047 new infections were found against 6,319 swabs, with a positivity rate of 16.5%. A net increase of 14.4% from yesterday.
There are 1,137 hospitalized with symptoms, 47 more than yesterday. In intensive care there are 184 beds occupied and 11 new entries are registered. The total number of people hospitalized is 1,321 people. The positives in home isolation are 34,270. The total number of positives is currently 35,591 people. The new discharged / cured are 380, bringing the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 58,462. On the other hand, there have been another 26 victims, two less than yesterday (2,494 since the start of the pandemic).
The division of new cases by province: Catania 301; Palermo 297; Messina 189; Ragusa 53; Trapani 46; Syracuse 16; Caltanissetta 87; Agrigento 55 and Enna 3.
Vaccines
In total, yesterday (Saturday, January 2) 4,438 anti-Covid vaccines were administered in Sicily. Since the beginning of the campaign, some 7,000 vaccines have been carried out on the island.
The ASP of Palermo in 10 hours carried out more than double the vaccinations against Covid of the previous two days. To the 1,158 registered until Friday, the 1,622 on Saturdays were added (an increase of 140%) for a total of 2,780 operators who were injected with the doses in the eight active sites in this first phase of the campaign (Buccheri Hospital La Ferla). “An organizational effort – says the ASP – that has found full confirmation in the workforce that continues to be incorporated more and more numerous”. Positive doctor vaccinated
A doctor at the Umberto I hospital in Syracuse who had been vaccinated six days ago in Palermo tested positive for Covid 19. There would be no other similar cases at the moment among the Syracuse health workers who traveled with the doctor. As at the moment, a correlation between the vaccine and the positive result seems to be excluded. It is suspected that the infection may already be incubating without experiencing any symptoms. “I tested positive for Covid. But I would get the vaccine again and I will make the withdrawal which represents the only great opportunity we have to win this battle. The mayor of Petralia Soprana, Pietro Macaluso, has also been vaccinated. The first citizen, the medical guard of the health authority, joined the vaccination campaign launched at the Madonna dell’Alto hospital. 
“For us doctors to be vaccinated is a duty – said Macaluso – because we are in contact with citizens who must be protected and because it is the only way out of the pandemic. I hope that as soon as possible, complying with the priorities defined by the law, everyone can get vaccinated ”.
