While shooting blanks, in video shot with a cell phone on the night of December 31, Iaccarino is heard saying: “It is not a joke”. After the first 4 shots, the politician still simulates the shots. The gun jams and a boy’s voice is heard urging him to fire again: “Shoot, shoot again. There is another shot.” Then a fifth shot begins.
At first only a part of the video was distributed, in which Iaccarino’s 16-year-old son fired. In that case, the politician had stigmatized what happened, speaking of “a trick that absolutely should not be done.” And he justified himself in this way: “We are not unconscious parents. I naively gave him consent to use the legally available red-cap shutter pistol, just to prevent him from going out on the streets to shoot New Year’s barrels.”
Later, however, he himself ended up at the center of the controversy. And the resignation came. “As is known – wrote Iaccarino to the mayor of Foggia – a remnant of my private life has become, despite me, in the public domain. This has damaged my public image (which has always been impeccable) and the institution that I represent. Needless to say, I am fully aware that in a city held hostage by the mob, in which shoot guns to kill, it is necessary to avoid any use, due to the strong symbolic devaluation they represent ”.
“I must put the interest of the institution that I represent and of the entire city, which due to my responsibility is negatively at the center of the news, first, and therefore make a painful but inevitable gesture for me. Therefore, I accept my resignation for the presidency of the municipal assembly ”, he concluded.
