Out of just over 5,000 tests (5,093) performed for the New Year, 14.41% of the swabs were positive. There are 734 new cases of Coronavirus infection found on the island on the last day, the one dedicated to parties among some close friends. The data regarding the admission of 20 people to intensive care (186 beds occupied compared to 176 yesterday) is alarming, with an increase also in the number of ordinary hospitalizations linked to Covid-19 (+17, from 1,073 the day before to 1,090) . The number of recovered and discharged patients rose to 58,182 (+103).
According to the data collected by Civil Protection and released by the Ministry of Health, this is the distribution of cases in Sicily: 183 in Palermo271 in Catania, 103 in Messina, 90 in Syracuse, 40 in Enna, 26 in Trapani, 17 in Ragusa, 3 in Caltanissetta and 1 in Agrigento. The number of the latest recorded deaths (28) is also worrying, bringing the tragic number of victims of the pandemic in Sicily to 2,468 victims. Currently 34,950 people are infected by the virus (+603 compared to January 1) and 33,674 are those who are in home isolation (+576 compared to yesterday).

The contagion index returns to 1.10
After days in which, although slowly and due to the various restrictions introduced at the national level, the contagion curve had been gradually decreasing, now the island has started to rise again. The Rt index calculated on the real number of tampons made touches 1.10 and hospitalizations grow again. The uncomfortable data comes from the statistical model developed by a team of researchers from the Department of Economics, Business and Statistics at the University of Palermo. Although the figures are updated to December 30, the trend is confirmed by the number of positives that in Sicily in recent days has always been around a thousand new cases.
