Then in the 90s he joined the League, which in 1992 elected him to Parliament. In the turbulent months of Tangentopoli, Formentini is the leader of the Carroccio in the Chamber. In 1993 he was elected mayor of Milan, the first non-socialist since 1967, after having struck Nando Dalla Chiesa, candidate of the center left.
