Marco Formentini, mayor of Milan from 1993 to 1997, died at the age of 90. Born in 1930, was an exponent of the Socialist Party but became known in the 1990s when he approached and later joined the Northern league. He was elected deputy of the Bossi league in 1992 it’s in the 1993 became the first mayor of Milan voted directly by the citizens: the June 20, 1993 prevailed in the second round in Born of the Church, candidate of the center-left. The conquest of Palazzo Marino was for Lega Nord the most prestigious result of a victorious round of administrative elections.

The board and the first sciura

For his advice he does not rely exclusively on personalities from the world of the Northern League but extends the administrative team to exponents of civil society: such as the art historian Philippe Daverio, to whom the delegation of Culture was entrusted, or the economist Marco Vitale who is in charge of the budget, professor Marco Giacomoni for social services and more Walter Ganapini with the responsibility of the Environment. Formentini had been married to Augusta Gariboldi, Milan’s first first sciura, who died in 2012 – a close-knit couple who had three children. In 2015 Formentini had remarried Daniela Gallone and the wedding was celebrated by the then mayor Giuliano Pisapia.

After Palazzo Marino

In 1997, the Northern League ran alone and Formentini did not even make it to the polls: Gabriele Albertini (Forza Italia) sat in the mayor’s chair, who in the second round beat the exponent of Ulivo Aldo Fumagalli.
After his experience as mayor, Formentini could no longer secure a leadership role in Italian politics. It was still MEP of the Northern League, but recently reelected to the Strasbourg parliament in 1999 (he had already been elected in 1994) he left the party. He later joined the Democrats.
