The joint report of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and Istat compares the period between March and October 2020 with the previous five-year period. This is what emerges in the region and in the province.
VENEZIA. The pandemic has increased the death rate in Venice by 12.4%. Numbers that make you tremble and that help to understand the impact of Covid and the drama experienced by thousands of families. The figure comes from the latest report on the impact of the pandemic made by Istat together with the Higher Institute of Health. The number was obtained by comparing the number of deaths in the period March-November 2020 (and therefore since the beginning of the pandemic) with the same interval of months in the last five years (the average of deaths between March-November of 2015 to 2019).
Among the dozens of municipalities in the province, the most emblematic case is that of Fiesso d’Artico (location, in recent months, of an important cluster). Among men, the (average) number of deaths in the last five years was 18.8. To which 19.8 women were added. In the last 8 months, the two items became respectively 31 and 34: an increase of 64.9% in the first case, 71.7% in the second case.
Which brings the number of deaths throughout the municipality to an overall increase of 68.4%. In confirmation of what is now tragically known, the number of victims increases with increasing age. Above all, the case of the municipality of Venice applies.
Taking the same time frame as a criterion, the age group between 65 and 74 years old registered an increase of 3.4%, which becomes 7.7% when analyzing the age between 75 and 84 years. More than double if, on the contrary, deaths from the age of 85 are taken into account: here the growth was 19% in the last 8 months. Finally, the report indicates that the excess of total mortality in November exceeds that of the March-April peak: + 42.8% compared to + 30.8% last April in Veneto.
The data in the comparison between sexes, between the last five years and 2020
In the second wave at the national level, the prevalence of the female component remains unchanged (54%), but the average age group of cases decreases: 45-49 years compared to 60-64 years in the first wave. In percentage terms, the number of infections registered in the very elderly population (80 years and over) rose from 26% in the first wave to 8% in the second. This decline is likely due in large part to greater diagnostic ability among younger age groups and in people with less severe symptoms.

So in Veneto. There are municipalities in which the percentage of deaths of women in 2020 compared to the previous five years is really impressive: reporting an increase of 471.4 percent in Barbona (Padua), in Lastebasse (400%) in Vicentino, in Pincara (164.7%) in Rodigino, in Lozzo di Cadore (257.1% where, however, other municipalities in the same valley registered significant increases in male deaths: 400% in Perarolo, 300 in Selva, 221 in Vigo. small should always be considered that the percentage of increase could correspond to an absolute number less than one might imagine.
