It has been a year-end in which we will not forget what we spend indoors to protect our health and that of others. I believe that each of us wants nothing more than to move on. We want this 2021 to erase the painful images of besieged hospitals, of our grandparents and parents greeted only through a glass of nursing homes, low blinds and empty cities. “Let’s take back our life,” said the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in his speech. I believe that it is the commitment that the entire ruling class of the country, in particular the political and governmental, must assume without reservation.
In fact, it was heartbreaking to witness the chaos of the past few weeks. It is as if there were two parallel worlds: the one summarized in the president’s three words: “seriousness, responsibility, solidarity.” In which it is necessary to act in a concrete and efficient way, without wasting resources, in which “distractions and loss of time are not allowed to pursue illusory partisan advantages.” And then there is the world in which the battle in the ruling coalition unfolds with vetoes, ultimatums, political and personal confrontations. An absurd movie passes before our eyes. The prime minister evidently no longer has the leadership of his majority in hand, the evident nervousness at the end of the year press conference was proof of this.
La solitary management of recovery fund projects, the announcement of commissary measures and structures that had not been agreed with the rest of the allies generated a conflict on the brink of crisis with Matteo Renzi and an acute, albeit clandestine, conflict with the Democratic Party. In the confrontation with the prime minister there is a party, Italy alive, poor in votes but decisive in Parliament. A game that plays with the crisis in the midst of a pandemic, with contrasts so exasperated that they make an almost impossible exit. At a time when the country would need maximum unity and maximum government efficiency (we always remember that the health of Italians and the fate of millions of workers and companies are at stake) politics seems to have taken the opposite direction. It is urgent to put an end to this drift. And for this, it is convenient to reflect on some essential conditions.
The coronavirus health emergency is not over. We still have many months of personal and collective sacrifices ahead of us. Must be organized, hopefully better than many other things in recent months, a convincing and rapid mass vaccination. The contagion curve must be broken to reopen schools safely and allow the many activities that closures have brought to their knees (shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, museums, cinemas) to reopen without the risk of returning quickly. Next-generation European funds are not just an opportunity to reboot but to modernize a country that even before the pandemic suffered from delays and inefficiencies. The assault on diligence these days is amazing, the multiplication of requests for bonuses, grants, micro-interventions linked to particular interests. It is the moment of the elections, of the selection of projects, already expired, truly oriented to growth. Only growth, innovation and competitiveness generated by good investments will make it possible to face the new inevitable deficit. Otherwise, the accumulated debt will become unsustainable and dangerous for the country. The Minister of Economy, Gualtieri, does well not to give in on this front.
Can the majority and their prime minister regain control of the situation? The movements of these days raise many doubts. If someone cultivates the illusion that he can earn a living, relying on the parliamentarians’ fear of new elections, it is better to cancel it immediately. We are in an emergency that has few precedents, in the classic situation in which all the political forces and energies of the country must be summoned. It is up to the Prime Minister to finally define the end-of-term program, regain the confidence of the majority and establish the ways for a wider participation of the opposition. A center-right that, beyond the propaganda about elections and new executives in these very difficult times, must give the necessary proof of maturity for those who want to run for the leadership of Italy. It is no longer the time for maneuvers, vetoes, personal conflicts and recriminations. Our future depends on upholding the health and quality of recovery plans. And, last but not least, the skills and professionalism that the government can entrust to carry out projects. Unfortunately, for now, everything seems to be going in a different direction. There are a few days to end this show.
P.S.The President of the Republic has called for all Italians to have the vaccine available and to use it without reservation. You will lead by example when it is your turn. This is the meaning of the proposal that we have addressed to all political leaders. Not to do it before others, with a privilege, but to assume a public position, putting aside the doubts and distinctions heard in the past. Again an unequivocal, responsible and united messageRio is a must to Italians.
