PORDENONE – Departments and structures in great difficulty in recent days in the hospitals of western Friuli. Since December 30, there has been a further spike in emergency room admissions and even hospitalizations for Covid cases show no signs of abating. In fact, in recent days the pressure on Covid departments has increased again. Also thanks to the situations of saturation and difficulty of entry (particularly on holidays) in peripheral structures such as the Covid room of the Spilimbergo hospital and the Rsa de Sacile and Maniago, which, however, always remain saturated. The concern of doctors is that there is an increase in the curves of infections and hospitalizations that could be a “child” of the holidays linked to Christmas days. And if so, this is the fear of the traders, the trend could remain constant and therefore very strong for several days.
LONG WAIT
One of the biggest problems that hospital staff must face is precisely that related to access to emergency rooms and the management of Covid patients who need to be hospitalized. The dramatic lack of beds often forces patients to be “parked” in the ER and emergency areas before they can access the Covid rooms. The situation is such that accesses are higher than patient discharges and that the only free beds are unfortunately those occupied by patients who die. The numbers are merciless: in recent days the number of hospitalized in Santa Maria degli Angeli has never dropped below 180 or even 190. If you think that during the first wave the number of Covid patients at the worst moment had reached 98 admissions with a number that today is practically double, the scenario is easily imaginable. And if the curves do not show signs of giving way in the coming days, it is not ruled out that it will be necessary to find additional beds to dedicate to patients with coronavirus. This is certainly not easy, given that in the last three months all the departments and areas susceptible to reconversion have been converted. It is also difficult to imagine “external” solutions, but the need is urgent. According to the rumors of the operators, at least another 25, 30 beds would be needed to avoid the “collapse” of the Covid departments. But at the same time it is necessary to keep some departments “clean” to be able to respond to the needs of all other pathologies. Just as it is the objective of the management to keep the four operating rooms operational, which in the last two months have made it possible to attend both emergencies and a certain number of cancer surgeries.
