End of the year barrels, unheard of citywide ordinance: many containers on fire

Genoa. Perhaps the desire to vent and “hunt” the old year, perhaps because the domestic confinement created the need to do something different, but the new year that has just ended was probably accompanied of the most intense “arsenal” of barrels and fireworks seen in Genoa on these occasions.

Thousands of explosions and pyrotechnic effects resounded in all corners of the city for several dozen minutes after midnight, defying the municipal ordinance that provided for them. “The prohibition of possession and use of any pyrotechnic device and explosive material in public areas and open to the public, even not frequented by people”: Reports arrive from all the districts, both from the suburbs and from the center, the latter illuminated shortly after midnight by naval signaling flares.

Fortunately, however, there would be no injuries to report: operational switchboard 118, in fact, reported a quiet night, with no “runs” or trauma from the mismanaged fireworks. Also thanks to the operation carried out in the last hours of 2020 by the police that allowed the seizure of several kilos of illegal barrels, as some examples of the “Covid Bomb”, the variant of the “Maradona ball” but with an even greater explosive potential, potentially deadly.

But for the firefighters it was a work night, with many garbage cans that caught fire because of the barrels: dozens of interventions practically everywhere in the city to prevent small fires from becoming dangerous, which luckily they have not been. The only tense moment is a fire exploded in an abandoned railway shed in Val PolceveraHowever, it has already been affected by similar episodes in the past, where a series of tires and various debris caught fire.
