Dead birds in Rome from barrels: what really happened

The news of the dead birds in Rome for the New Year’s barrels is going around the world. After photos and videos that appeared online at night and the news spread in the morning, many screamed at the deception for a long time, narrating a photo linked to another event. As we explained in our first article, the images of dead birds, disseminated today by various users, certainly had a different location than the events of February 2020, when the fall of a tree on Viale del Policlinico caused the death of several birds.

In today’s case, the facts refer to the Termini station area. During the morning, other birds were found dead in the heart of the capital, as shown in the photos taken by the photographer of the agency Ansa. From the beginning, we hypothesized starlings scared and disoriented, dead or after impact against windows, against high-voltage cables or after colliding with each other or after heart attacks caused by the fright of the barrels.

Lipu’s explanation

Lipu now also explains what happened and confirms, once again, the veracity of the news. “Unfortunately yes, it happened last night in Rome near Termini station.” Dead birds were also found in via Nazionale, piazza Esedra and via dei Fori Imperiali. “In the Roma Termini area,” explains Lipu, “there is a large bedroom. Starlings are social animals and at night they form bedrooms in trees that can number many thousands of individuals. Last night the explosion of the barrels scared the animals that took off at the same time, in a disorderly way and in the dark and many individuals collided with each other and with the suspended cables and architectural barriers typical of the center of the city.

To the objection “have the barrels always been there because it only happened this year?”, Lipu responds: “Starlings in recent years have decreased their presence in the center of Rome, perhaps also as a result of the dissuasive interventions of almost twenty years. In the last two years, as of December 31, there were no bedrooms present or in any case not so numerous. This year, however, the starlings have returned to the center of Rome and as no deterrent measures have been taken, they remained in the place so far in a very large number. That is why it has happened this year. Similar episodes were also registered in recent years, especially between 2003 and 2010, when the presence of these animals in Rome was really important “.

In the past, Lipu had already denounced: “With regard to wild animals, especially for birds that are often not considered, the outbreak of fireworks in the middle of the night causes unimaginable damage; in wild birds an outbreak causes such a fright that it can cause death by a heart attack or make them flee from bedrooms formed by trees and hedges (hence the importance of urban vegetation and not drastically crown the treetops), and fly blind even in the dark for kilometers, going to die on a wall or electrical cable; those who manage to land or perch on an artifact are often killed by cars or by freezing due to cold winter temperatures and lack of shelter. Recovered birds are still alive, which are generally brought to the Wildlife Rescue Centers, increase the costs of care and the hours of work of the volunteers, which can very well be avoided with the pr or prohibition of the use of such fires “.
