Rain of dead starlings from barrels in the center of Rome. Especially around Termini station and via Nazionale, Esquiline and Colle Oppio. Birds probably crushed by heart attacks while trying to escape the explosions of fireworks and firecrackers of various strengths that flooded all of Rome despite the municipal ordinance issued 24 hours before New Year’s Eve. A macabre carpet of bird carcasses fallen to the ground was filmed on social media on Friday morning, with photos and videos on many sites, and also on communication platforms with many publications.
Similar episodes would have also occurred in other areas of the capital. Immediately after midnight, but also a few minutes earlier, starlings began to fall lifelessly onto roads, sidewalks, and even condo terraces. A direct testimony of the “volume of fire” produced by this new year that caused nine injuries by the barrels with a forecast of five to 15 days for bruises and contusions in arms and face, without non-serious consequences for the eyes in some cases, the center, suburbs and also Roman castles, between Marino, Frascati and Velletri.
