Manchester United footballer Edinson Cavani has been banned for three days in the Premier League, the main English football league, for writing a comment on Instagram deemed racist.

On November 29, after Manchester United’s 3-2 game against Southampton, Cavani posted a story on his Instagram profile in which he responded to some compliments by commenting: “Thank you black.” The player then apologized and explained that it was “a warm greeting to a friend.”

The decision was made after a month of investigation by the Football Association, the English football federation, which explained in a statement how the comment violated the federation’s rules for being offensive. The violation is also aggravated, since “it contained references, explicit or implicit, to color and / or race and / or ethnic origin.” Cavani will also have to pay a fine of 100,000 pounds (just over 111,000 euros).

It is not the first time that the Football Association has sanctioned the behavior of players on social networks. Last year it happened to Bernardo Silva of Manchester City, for a tweet addressed to his teammate Benjamin Mendy. In 2014, however, it happened to Mario Balotelli for a photo shared on Instagram.
