Agitu Gudeta, an extraordinary woman who survived racism, killed by sexist violence – Corriere.it

That’s why Gudeta does it She was an extraordinary woman: she had fought in Ethiopia to defend poor herders and their right to land stolen by landlords. Then, when it had become too risky, he returned to Italy, to Trento, where he had studied sociology, and in our mountains he had saved her, she who was a foreigner and Italy had chosen her, a tradition that was in danger of extinction, raising the indigenous goats of the Mocheni valley. He had this gift: show us the treasures we had forgotten we had.

To be successful he had to wrestle with racism of those who reproached her for not being from here, too black and perhaps and above all too good and intelligent. About two years ago, Agitu had received threats and had been attacked with racist insults by the man who lived in the cabin near her house. Last January, the perpetrator of the violence, who also attacked the Malian cheesemaker who helped Agitu, was sentenced to nine months for injuries by the Court of Trento. Agitu had moved on. The 42-year-old exiled businessman had also become a symbol, of the stubbornness and strength that manage to get the best out of the encounter of different worlds, but not so far away.

That’s why it also hurts even more to be killed. Having escaped from class violence, he had managed to keep racism at bay, but was the victim of another “ism”, that of sexist violence, prepared by a man who like her came from Africa: the Ghanaian pastor Adams Suleimani, 32 years old. The man says he acted for money, but after beating her he made another terrible gesture: sexual abuse. A femicide in full swing. Proof that women, even extraordinary ones, have to constantly struggle with multiple and constant forms of violence, which often intersect. Today is a sad day. The only thing that occurs to me is that we have to work harder every day against those “isms” that have broken such a beautiful and fruitful life.
