OSLO. A landslide engulfed Gjerdrum, a Norwegian town of 5,000 inhabitants about 25 km northeast of the capital Oslo. The BBC reports this, stressing that there are currently at least ten people injured. Instead, 21 are missing, about 500 evacuated. The emergency services, civil protection and the army are working. “It’s a disaster,” said local police chief of operations Roger Pettersen.
Norwegian police were alerted at 4 am to the landslide in the village of Ask, in the municipality of Gjerdrum. Photos taken in the area showed at least eight houses destroyed. About 40 ambulances were dispatched to the scene and the evacuation continued as authorities said there was a risk of further landslides. Police spokesman Pettersen told Norwegian public broadcaster Nrk that there were no reports of missing persons, but authorities did not rule out that people may be in the collapsed buildings. There would be no serious injuries.
“It hurts to see how the forces of nature have devastated Gjerdrum. My thoughts are with all those who have been affected by the landslide. It is now important that the emergency services do their job, “Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg tweeted.
