Maurizio Jack Giustolisi, 44-year-old athlete, remains hospitalized. With an entire city cheering him on.
CATANIA – Forty-two days have passed since the start of the hardest phase of the coronavirus. Forty-two kilometers that Maurizio Jack Giustolisi, 44, used to run as a great athlete, before being admitted to a Covid ward. And now he is in the center of that path, of that career. A race for life, with an entire city cheering him on.
Hospitalization
It all started around November 20, when Maurizio Giustolisi’s conditions worsened due to the coronavirus. Not just an athlete, Maurizio is an employee of the ST, well known and appreciated. And it is at the beginning of this battle that his co-workers, with Angelo Mazzeo from Ugl at the helm, they launched a solidarity contest. A race to be close to him, in that other race, which had just begun.
“Serve plasma urgently”
A call to collect plasma. The invitation addressed to friends, acquaintances or ordinary citizens who could donate hyperimmune plasma. “He is an athlete – said Mazzeo – therefore a person without pathologies and specifically strong, but unfortunately, despite this, he is not managing to overcome this terrible virus that is Covid-19”.
Ecmo reporter
After a few days at the Garibaldi, Maurizio was transferred to the Ecmo department of the Policlinico di Catania, to undergo extracorporeal breathing. His lungs were deactivated for several weeks, the blood was purified and oxygenated with a machine.
New transfer
Exactly he was in the Ecmo department for 26 days. And on December 26, for Santo Stefano, the doctors extubated him. It was not easy. The inflammatory state of your lungs is still active. Now Maurizio wears a helmet for oxygenation, the prognosis is reserved. But he is running and all Catania is at his side.
