The two ships have been parked in front of the port of Huanghua since June 29 due to a trade dispute between China and Australia that prevents them from unloading their cargo and, due to the concomitance of the pandemic, the crew members who in several cases have been on board for over a year. On the two ships, owned by the Neapolitan shipping companies, 13 seafarers from various Italian municipalities embark, including Naples, Vico Equense, Sant’Agnello, Procida and Monte di Procida and at the initiative of the mayors of these municipalities a letter was requested for the December 15, the intervention of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Minister Di Maio.

“La Farnesina, in close and continuous relationship with the Italian Embassy in Beijing, has followed the delicate matter with the utmost attention since its outbreak,” said Di Maio in the letter to the mayors, dated December 24. “Our representation established promptly and maintained constant contact with the owners of the two boats and especially with our compatriots to monitor their health conditions, ready to intervene if a critical problem occurred – he adds -. At the same time, the Embassy has carried out several awareness-raising efforts at the highest level to achieve a quick release of the delicate situation ”.

And it is after writing “personally” to the Chinese minister and “thanks also to the incisive diplomatic action” of the Embassy that “last December 21 we finally obtained the confirmation of the authorization to land Italian seafarers in the port of Huanghua”. “I am sure – Di Maio concludes – that this evolution will be appreciated by the shipowners who, I am convinced, will not stop taking the necessary measures to achieve a crew rotation, so that our compatriots can finally return to Italy”.
