Today’s main novelties

  • On December 27, the House passed the budget law for 2021, the law that establishes each year how, where and when tax revenue will be managed and public money spent. The law, which is also often referred to as an “economic maneuver,” was approved with 298 votes in favor, 125 against and 8 abstentions and must now receive Senate approval before December 31. The final vote on the budget law is scheduled for Tuesday, December 29, or at the latest on Wednesday 30: the government will deposit the trust, and it will not undergo any change with respect to the one approved in the Chamber. The maneuver contains numerous interventions in support of workers and companies in crisis due to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Here we have explained them in detail.
  • The Ministry of the Interior has sent the prefects the instructions to follow so that, with the use of the police and the carabinieri, escorts for the transfers and surveillance of vaccines are organized at administration points throughout Italy. If necessary, as happened in Rome with the arrival of the first 9,750 doses, the prefects will convene the provincial commissions of public order and security to organize the services. After arriving at the Pratica di Mare air base, in the municipality of Pomezia, in the metropolitan area of Rome, they will be transported by the army to the 21 collection centers, one in each region and in the autonomous provinces, from where then they will be distributed, under the coordination of the prefects in the 300 administration points.
  • Tomorrow, December 29, 470 thousand doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against coronavirus will arrive in Italy, after the 9,750 doses sent in recent days for the “symbolic” vaccination day on December 27: this first supply will effectively start the vaccination campaign for which the health workers will be subjected first, followed by the guests of the RSA, the nursing homes. Starting tomorrow, every week until March 2021, a supply equivalent to 470 thousand doses will arrive in Italy. In total, it is expected that in the first quarter of the new year 7.8 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will arrive, in addition to the others that will be approved by the European Commission.
  • The municipality of Bergamo will declare itself “offended” in the criminal process initiated by the Bergamo prosecutor’s office, which is investigating to reconstruct responsibilities in managing the epidemic. During the first wave, in the province of Bergamo, the coronavirus killed thousands of people, many more than official figures say. In the months of March and April, a total of 912 people died in the city of Bergamo compared to 235 deaths on average in the previous five years, so in 2020 there was an excess mortality of 288%. The Bergamo magistrates began their investigations in April and have so far hypothesized three charges: guilty epidemic, involuntary and false homicide. Here we have explained in detail the reasons for the decision of the municipality of Bergamo.
