Slight delay in vaccine deliveries in eight European countries, including Spain, due to a logistical problem at the Belgian Pfizer plant.

The Spanish Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, revealed in an interview with the radio station “Cadena Ser” that late yesterday afternoon the pharmaceutical company communicated to the Government of Madrid a “logistical accident” due to excess prevented the delivery of the planned doses of the Covid vaccine. The problem has been solved and tomorrow, December 29, the next weekly batch of 350,000 doses will be delivered.

The second shipment of the 450,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine leaving Belgium will arrive tomorrow in Italy. According to what has been learned, it is not ruled out that, depending also on the difficulties in reaching the different territories and current climatic conditions, in some regions the doses may even arrive the day after tomorrow. Pfizer, which will deliver the vaccines by its own means to 300 points throughout the territory, would have guaranteed, based on what it learned, that there is no delay for Italy and that the delivery plan will go ahead as planned.

Spain was waiting for 350 thousand doses of the vaccine, but it will have to wait a few more hours. According to Minister Illa, thanks to the vaccination campaign, 70 percent of the Spanish population should achieve immunity by the end of the summer. “The vaccination plan is made in accordance with the Autonomous Communities and we are distributing the doses equally according to the elderly population,” added Illa, who did not want to enter into controversy with the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who he complained about the low number of doses assigned to his Region.

It is not known which other 7 countries are involved in the logistics problem. This delay follows that in some German cities, after detectors showed that around 1,000 doses of the vaccine were not stored at the proper temperature.
