2,345 drug studies worldwide, 59 vaccine candidates
There are 2,345 studies in the world and 72 in Italy on drugs for the treatment of Covid-19. While 59 are the candidate vaccines in trials and 4 are already approved in the world. A balance is made of the data presented in the infographic prepared by the “Clinical trials” working group of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Iss), updated on December 18. When it comes to vaccines, ongoing trials around the world have 641,164 enrolled volunteers and 19% of these studies are already in phase 3, which is being tested in large numbers of patients.
China has the highest number, 43, followed by the United States with 21 and Great Britain with 12. However, as of December 21, there are 4 approved vaccines in the world: Pfizer’s developed by the United States and Germany has received the green light in the Union European, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain; Sinopharm developed by China and approved in the United Arab Emirates, China and Bahrain; Sputnik V, developed and approved in Russia, and the vaccine from the American company Moderna, approved in the United States (and since December 23 also in Canada).
Achieving herd coverage will continue to be a long road that will take months, if not years. Meanwhile, studies are also continuing to find a cure. Based on immunomodulators and hyperimmune plasma antivirals, of the 72 ongoing studies in Italy, 50 have been authorized by the Italian Medicines Agency (Aifa), which has also announced its intention to evaluate the launch of a monoclonal antibody assay: the same used by Donald Trump and already authorized as an emergency in some countries, including the United States and Canada.
