CASTELNOVO DI SOTTO (Reggio Emilia) – The small car was traveling via Prato Bovino, north of Castelnovo Sotto. The exit from the street was made near the building that houses the town’s mosque. Complicit in the loss of tire grip was the heavy freezing rain that characterized the afternoon of Christmas Day over a large part of the Reggio area. A kind of hail that bleached the plain to the limits of Mantua and Modena.
Slipping on the slippery asphalt by the phenomenon, the Fiat Punto crashed violently against a concrete pole of the electrical network and then stopped its race ending in the ditch at the edge of the road. The consequences of the accident for the driver, Niki De Marco, 23, were very serious. For his rescue, the 118 station sent several operators who arrived aboard two vehicles. The helicopter rescue was also alerted, but was unable to intervene due to adverse weather conditions.
Once stabilized, the wounded man was transported in desperate conditions to Santa María Nuova, where he sadly died a few hours later from the reported trauma.
The passenger accompanying him was also taken to the hospital, a 31-year-old friend who suffered moderate injuries and is not in danger of death.
Niki De Marco lived in Cogruzzo, not far from the crash site. From the Sinta family, he worked in iron gathering. He was accompanied and the father of two children, the youngest of whom was born last summer. Family members are awaiting authorization for the release of the body. The prosecutor has opened a file on the episode. The carabinieri, after leaving the Gattatico station, dealt with the conclusions of the case. Firefighters also intervened at the site to ensure the necessary security.
