These days there is a lot of talk about anti-Covid vaccines. On the one hand, the hope of overcoming this pandemic that has changed our daily lives, on the other, the timely and inevitable fear of something presented as new, unique, “unproven”. In reality, as often happens, we panic every time we are faced with something unknown that we think we cannot control. Always happens.
When the first electrical cables appeared, associations against electricity were created and there was no shortage of holy men and apocalyptic announcements that warned people of this mischief, electricity in reality, that ran through those cables. Therefore, knowing a topic better can help us to have confidence and trust.
Let’s start with the new vaccines. New up to a point. Obviously its purpose has always been the same: to create a immune response that protects the vaccinated from the disease. To do this, you need something that triggers this immune response. In the vaccines we’ve been making for decades, parts of bacteria or viruses, or whole but inactivated viruses, are used that are rendered harmless. Our immune system recognizes them, forms antibodies and thus, in case of contact with the virus (or bacteria) it is ready, attacks it and prevents the disease.
A brilliant system that has saved countless lives and terrible pain and suffering. The purpose of these new vaccines is the same, to use part of the virus SARS-CoV-2 (the infamous “Coronavirus”, the one that causes Covid) to create antibodies that will protect us from any disease.
What changes? A small detail, the fruit of scientific progress. Normally, as mentioned, the part of the virus used to create the antibodies is injected directly with the vaccine, in this case a code what makes our own cells create this part of the virus. Our immune system, when the cells have created this part of the virus, forms the antibodies and we are vaccinated.
This technology is a true miracle of science, also because it can be used to treat even serious diseases, even tumors. But let’s get on with the Coronavirus.
In one type of vaccine available today, the “part” of the virus (is a protein, which allows the virus to infect our cells) is in a code, carried by capsules that dissolve after entering our cell; another vaccine uses an inactivated virus, which acts as a “carrier” (called a “vector”). In any case, our immune system produces antibodies against this protein and thus protects us.
Do these vaccines work? We don’t have much data, some studies do. Tested in thousands of people, these vaccines appear to be protect against disease. We have some doubts about it time of this protection, on the possibility of avoiding only the disease (symptoms, severity) or even infection, contagion; but the protection seems effective. And then security.
In tests carried out on these thousands of volunteers there were no serious or unexpected side effects. Of course, the experimentation did not last years and we cannot know (although there is no reason to fear it) if in the long term, over the years, there may be unforeseen effects, but this happens for everyone. medicines, even for those (and examples that we have used continuously) for decades and with which we have a lot of experience.
Summarizing. From a scientific point of view, these vaccines are a outstanding achievement look with admiration; in practical use (which occurs in all medicines) a risk-benefit balance must always be established. In the case of these vaccines i risks they are theoretically very low, worrying data does not emerge and it is plausible that they do not. The benefits, on the other hand, are very high. They appear to be very effective and appear to protect against disease. Then there are many other questions.
They talk about a new one variant of the virus (which, when talking about viruses, is practically normal) but it seems that this will not change anything in the effectiveness of the vaccine (it is a minor mutation, not fundamental); it is said that this vaccine can “change our DNA”, nonsense spread by people who have not passed the test genetics or a few pages of biology, the first to study to become a doctor.
It is said that there are people all over the world death after vaccination, other nonsense without feedback, but I can tell you that in the world there are people who died after Christmas lunch, because there are coincidences.
In short, many things are said. As always, I have studied and am studying these vaccines. Of course I would like a lot of other data but for now I am satisfied with what I have and I think I will get vaccinated. Upstream of this are the authorizations from the health authorities (Fda, Ema, Aifa) that have other data and have seriously evaluated the efficacy and safety of these drugs.
In short, I would say that we have some fixed points. If I can say it confidentially, no one can hear us anyway: let’s get vaccinated. This disease, despite what gurus, charlatans and fake Nobel laureates say, is a bad thing, very insidious and devious and it is not worth dying for (yes, I have seen die from this disease) to continue orchidea68 on Facebook.
