The baby’s mother received help from the hospital staff also from a psychological point of view before leaving the child she gave birth: after consulting, she confirmed her decision, thus entrusting the child to the two would-be adoptive parents.
“The newborn was immediately received with affection – says the director of health of Frangipane, Angelo Frieri, to the local newspaper Ottopagine, excited and happy -. Immediately a great contest of silent solidarity began. Someone gave him dresses, someone else a hat. Many gestures of affection that focused on the child. When the little one who had already become Frangipane’s “pet” left the nest, in the young couple’s pram, there were those who couldn’t hold back their tears ”. The law provides for women who do not want to keep the baby the possibility of waiving recognition after delivery. The aim is to avoid many tragedies, sadly more and more frequent, of the abandonment of newborns by desperate mothers. According to the NGO Ai.Bi.Amici dei Bambini, in Italy each year about 400 newborns are saved because their mothers leave them in hospitals or in “cradles for life”.
