The dosing procedure has started in Careggi. There are more than 113 thousand health workers to be “protected” in our region: 227 thousand vials are needed considering the withdrawals. Out (for now) 44,500, including family doctors, volunteer operators 118
FLORENCE. Here are the first vials of the Pfizer vaccine at the Careggi hospital pharmacy – they arrived around 8.10am. The first dose was injected around 8:45 a.m. to a nurse from the Covid ward, Simona Bausi, 50.
THE PREMIUM VACCINE
“So much pride and so much hope that we will get out of this dark period. It seems to me that vaccinating is the right thing to do right now. There is some anxiety, but above all hope for this vaccine. I hope to make an antibody ‘wagon'” , are the nurse’s first words after the injection. “We are all happy to be here today and to be the first to get vaccinated. Especially for health professionals, getting vaccinated should be practically mandatory. The risk of being vectors of infection for those of us who work with sick people is heavy and then we want to be an incentive for everyone else. There’s a lot of faith in science, and I’m sure it will work out. “
The second injections always to another nurse in the Covid room, Elena Berti. While the third dose is for Angela Brandi, Careggi’s Healthcare Director.
THE PROCEDURE
There are only a few hundred, about fifty for each of the 11 Tuscan hospitals, and for the RSA of Montedomini, reported by the regional health departments to Commissioner Domenico Arcuri. The operators of the Florentine hospital will participate in the delicate and symbolic operation of preparing the syringes and classifying the vials among the other structures in Tuscany.
President Eugenio Giani and councilors for health and civil protection Simone Bezzini and Monia Monni await the precious shipment. Twelve cars from GSV, a company specializing in transport with respect to the cold chain, will arrive in the Tuscan provinces escorted by police patrols that will take turns along the Tuscan highway and roads.
It will be a preview of the vaccination campaign with twelve groups of doctors, nurses, health social workers, men and women selected, and in order to represent the world of Tuscan health. Some were selected from the candidates to be part of the first group, others with a lottery from the volunteer staff. Approximately 50 operators for each garnish.
General tests, in fact.
WAITING FOR THE “REAL” LOAD
With insiders already aware that by January it will not be possible to vaccinate all those who have requested it: for phase 1, 113 thousand applications have been collected but only 135,900 vaccines arrive. In fact, considering that everyone will have to give the vaccine first and the booster after 21 days, half is missing. An actual road load is expected in a few days, the first of five exceptional transports scheduled for the end of January: 27,500 will arrive in Careggi on December 30. They will leave Rome on the 28th but for each shipment, the Region has calculated a couple of travel days so as not to risk blowing up the organization in case of delay, as has already happened with this first shipment scheduled for two days ago. If everything goes according to plan on the day of arrival, vaccination will begin in nursing homes while for operators it will be on January 4 to have time to reserve the day and time for each of those who have already registered.
HEALTH CARE PERSON: DOSE NOT FOR EVERYONE
The first to be vaccinated will be those who work in the risk departments and in the Rsa in a transversal way, from the primary staff to the cleaning staff. Then the others. A large part of those who had requested the vaccine in the first phase will have to wait and it is not yet known how long: at the moment there are vaccines only for personnel who work in hospitals, in nursing homes (doses are foreseen for guests), in facilities for the disabled (69 thousand people) while the arrival of the vaccine for general practitioners, pediatricians, medical guards, pharmacists, dentists, volunteers, 118 employees (44,500 professionals) is not yet scheduled.
It is not ruled out that the Moderna vaccine will arrive from the beginning of February, but there is still nothing official or more programming for the Pfizer one. Therefore, the Region should evaluate, in order not to risk frustrating the vaccination campaign, setting aside the booster dose, which will be carried out at 21 days, for each vaccine that is injected. The organization of Commissioner Arcuri does not arrive in terms of details and figures beyond February: if the times to close the vaccines of phase 1 are not yet known due to the availability of doses for the rest of the categories (in fact all the others) It seems there will be a wait until April, maybe May. In phase 2, the first – after the world of health – to be vaccinated will be those over 80 and immediately afterwards those who suffer from certain diseases, for the rest there are few certainties. In Tuscany we will opt for a campaign strictly organized in a reservation system. Public buildings would be preferred to tents in the squares posed by Arcuri. In this second phase, the organization will change hands, from the health department to civil protection.
