Six cases of ‘English variant’ Covid-19 Tigem was found by researchers from the genomic sequencing group coordinated by Davide Cacchiarelli at the Telethon Institute for Genetics and Medicine in Pozzuoli. The six swabs came from travelers returning from London, registered in recent days at Capodichino airport before the suspension of flights from the United Kingdom.
The researchers determined the complete sequence of the viral genome in 115 positive swabs made in recent months in Campania by the Zooprophylactic Institute. In addition to the six ‘English’ cases, eight different variants were identified in the remaining samples analyzed, all belonging to the ‘type B’, widespread in Europe.
The study, the results of which have been deposited in Gisaid (the world reference database for viral genome sequences), therefore provides a first map of the Sars-CoV-2 variants present in Campania. Further studies are being conducted in close collaboration with researchers at the Spallanzani Institute, the Region announced.
Meanwhile, Sars-CoV-2 positive swabs compatible with the ‘English variant’ of the virus and isolated from two laboratories of the Abruzzo regional network they were sent to the Spallanzani Institute in Rome for confirmation of the diagnostic result. The Minister of Health of the Abruzzo Region, Nicoletta Verì, and the regional reference for maxi health emergencies, Alberto Albani, have ordered it on the basis of current scientific protocols. “It is a small number of samples – explains Albani – isolated in recent days, on which, however, more research must be carried out to establish whether it is really the variant of the virus identified in the United Kingdom or in another way ”. Verì and Albani are in close and continuous contact with the President of the Region, Marco Marsilio, to update him on the evolution of the situation. “Meanwhile – underlines Commissioner Verì – all the health security protocols have been applied to patients: they have been isolated and the contact tracing activity has begun to reconstruct their contacts and movements. he intervened promptly and taking all precautions. “
And there are three patients already identified in Veneto positive for the English variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus. Antonia Ricci, general director of the Venice Zooprophylactic Institute, said today, illustrating the preliminary results of the sequencing studies on the variants of the virus in the press point of the Region. Ricci explained that zooprophylaxis has developed a rapid model that identifies typical ‘English variant’ mutations, without requiring genome sequencing, which is performed later. “We had identified – he said – 5 samples of patients who were related to the United Kingdom, therefore suspected of being carriers of this variant: of these, 3 tested positive for the variant, two in Treviso, one in Vicenza”.
