VENICE. The vaccine has arrived in Italy and is currently on its way to Veneto. The countdown begins for the ‘Vaccine Day’, the day on which all European countries will begin to administer the anti-Covid vaccine. The organizing machine was launched and the first 9,750 doses of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine arrived in Italy. The vaccination campaign will start tomorrow, December 27: at 8 in the Spallanzani hospital in Rome, the first to be vaccinated will be a nurse, the symbolic face of health personnel on the front line for months in the battle against the coronavirus.
For Veneto there is no regional center, but the focus is immediately on the provincial subdivision. The arrival was planned by helicopter for security reasons and was immediately transferred to the provincial centers.
The University Polyclinic of Padua It has been indicated as a reference center for the conservation and distribution of vaccines in the Padua area. In fact, the hospital is equipped with adequate freezers to store serum at – 80 degrees.
Two vaccination stations will be activated on Sunday, one in the polyclinics of the Covid Hospital in Schiavonia and another in the outpatient clinics of the Cittadella hospital, with 55 doses each.
For the province of Venice on USL 3, the “super fridge” for storage is located in the Angelo di Mestre. The first 120 vaccines will be administered to the largest number of volunteers, including doctors and nurses from all the hospitals in the area: Mestre, Dolo, Venice, Mirano and Chioggia. For him Treviso area and the Belluno The precious cargo will arrive frozen from the air force base in Pratica di Mare, near Rome, and will be stored in the large cold room already installed at the Vittorio Veneto hospital. Between January 4 and 7, the anti-Covid vaccination campaign will start with the beginning of the administration of the first 25 thousand doses in the Brand.
The vaccine distribution operation is ongoing at this time. The van equipped with a cold room left Belgium with the vials destined for our country and arrived in Rome last night: stopping at the “Salvo D’Acquisto” barracks of the carabinieri, in Tor di Quinto, to arrive this morning – around 10 – the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani, where the delivery will take place. The van traveled under escort from the Brenner border to Rome and was seized by patrols from Polstrada and carabinieri.
“Italy is reborn with a flower” – the primrose will characterize the design of the vaccination pavilions – is the motto chosen by the Ministry of Health.
On Saturday 26 the so-called ‘Operation Eos’ is launched, in the plan drawn up by the Joint Operations Command of the Defense Forces, at the request of the extraordinary commissioner, Domenico Arcuri, and in close collaboration with its structure.
In a first phase, military vehicles and aircraft will help distribute the first 9,750 doses, delivering them to their destination. The Carabinieri will provide escort service to ground movements. The doses, stored in a first phase in the Spallanzani hospital in Rome, will then be distributed in the rest of the regions so that the entire country can participate in the ‘European Vaccine Day’ on Sunday, December 27.
From the Spallanzani institute, part of the vaccines will be transported to Pratica di Mare where 5 aircraft (two C27Js from the Air Force, two Dornier Do.228 from the Army and one P-180 from the Navy) will reach the most distant destinations. The remaining vaccines will reach destinations by land with a total commitment of 60 cars and about 250 soldiers.
Subsequent doses of Pfizer, as required by the vaccine plan, will be delivered directly by the pharmaceutical company to the 300 administration sites identified by the commissioner according to the regions. In the second phase, as soon as the ‘cold’ vaccines from the other pharmaceutical companies (AstraZeneca, Moderna, etc.) are available, the Armed Forces, based on the indications provided by the extraordinary commissioner, will dedicate themselves to logistical transport throughout the national territory.
The main hub for the storage of the doses will be at the Pratica di Mare airport from where they will depart to reach the 21 ‘Sub Hubs’, military structures located in all the Regions that guarantee the necessary security measures. From here they will leave to be delivered to the administration sites.
The plan calls for the use of 11 planes, 73 helicopters and more than 360 motor vehicles. The logistical organization also contemplates the use of the refrigerated shelters supplied to the Defense. For both types of vaccines, according to the requests of the regional and local health service, the Defense also plans to establish fixed and mobile vaccination stations (Defense Vaccination Devices – PVD) through the conversion of the ‘Drive Through Defense’ , currently operating throughout Italy to perform swabs and contribute, together with the Ministry of Health, to the detection activity. Upon request, the medical personnel of the Armed Forces will be available for a possible administration also with mobile teams at the RSA or at home for citizens with mobility difficulties.
