While in a Milan in the red zone we were preparing to celebrate Christmas, at night, at the Niguarda hospital the doctors urgently operated on a person who was risking his life by transplanting a new heart.
In the ‘house of transplants’, as the Milanese hospital is called, in a moment of hope and rebirth, the team of cardiac surgeons led by Claudio Russo performed an emergency heart transplant, saving the life of a young man.
The patient, hospitalized for some time in Niguarda and with a serious heart disease with the risk of serious life-threatening arrhythmias, was operated on Christmas night thanks to the arrival of a compatible heart, by a donor from Turin.
In Milan, Niguarda is the only hospital that performs heart transplants and is one of the three authorized centers in the Lombardy Region; Heart transplants are performed for both pediatric and adult patients. The first heart transplant was performed in 1985 and since then this procedure has been used to treat more advanced forms of heart failure.
