Christmas cashback, last days to participate: what to do if contactless does not work and what can be bought

Have you attended the Christmas Cashback Extra? How many payments have you made? Have all contactless payments been tracked (those where you have to bring the card without inserting it in the Pos)? How much cash back, how many cash back have you accumulated? Italy is the red zone until December 26 but if you go shopping, and pay by card or debit card, you will be entitled to a refund of 10% of the total amount that will be credited in February 2021 to the Iban indicated at the time of the inscription. in the IO application or in the web channels of the banks or service issuers.

In less than a week the Extra Christmas Cashback will end which began on December 8 and will end on December 31, 2020. It is a government operation to encourage purchases in physical stores (no returns, in fact, for those who buy online).

In this phase, in which the Christmas Extra Cashback is in force, at least 10 operations without cash (without cash) are sufficient and a refund of 10% of the amount spent will be recognized, up to a maximum of 1,500 euros (the refund will be for maximum 150 euros).

There are approximately 5.3 million citizens registered in Cashback to date, from the IO application and other channels (absolute value 5,325,906) while there are 8.5 million activated Payment instruments (absolute value 8,555,902). On the other hand, approximately 22.3 million transactions have been processed (already acquired by the system and visible by the participants (absolute value 22,367,579). The potential Cashback accumulated to date by the participants is +90.6 million euros (absolute value 90,634,310 euros). Of which, the actual Cashback that will be paid to citizens who have already acquired the right to Christmas Extra Cashback is approximately 37 million euros (absolute value 36,912,948 euros).

Goodbye to cards and cash now there is a smartphone: Italy is discovering digital payments

Let’s recap how it works (and how it has gone so far).

Does the refund continue as of January 1?

As of January 1, 2021 the cashback continues: the reimbursement will be semi-annual, always 10% of the amount spent up to a maximum of 1500 euros per semester and at least 50 cashless payments (without cash) must be made per semester. In one year, therefore, it could be possible to accumulate a maximum return of 300 euros (150 euros per semester).

What is supercashback

Therefore, not only does the cashback continue even after Christmas, but there will be a supercashback for those who make a lot of purchases and pay a lot with a card or debit card or with mobile applications (for example, Bancomatpay, Applepay, Googlepay, Satispay, Paypal, Samsungpay, however attention, they are not yet active at the time of writing) The reimbursement of the supercashback will be semi-annually for 1,500 euros, in addition to the usual cashback, to the first 100,000 registrants who have made the greatest number of cashless transactions, provided they make at least 50 operations payment during that semester. For the purposes of reimbursement, the following periods are considered: January 1, 2021 – June 30, 2021; July 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021; From January 1, 2022 to June 30, 2022. Refunds of cash refunds and higher refunds are credited within 60 days after the end of the period.

How does cashback work in general?

To participate in the Cashback Christmas Extra (hereinafter Christmas Cashback) and then in the ordinary cashback, you must be of legal age, enroll in the Cashback program and make payments without cash, that is, electronically, therefore with payment cards or applications. Attention, cards are also included that can only be used in a specific circuit (gift cards, social cards, shopping cards) but must be affiliated with PagoPA. If the card has two circuits (just see if there are more logos on the card: for example Maestro and Pagobancomat) you need to register twice to track all payments for money back purposes. Only after you have registered all your payment instruments can you start paying and therefore accumulate refunds. There is no minimum spending amount.

How and where do I register?

You register with the Spid or with the electronic identity card in IO.it, the PagoPA application, you know who used it last summer to get the vacation bonus, otherwise you can download it from the Apple Store or Google Store. This is the social profile of IO:

Otherwise, you can register through the systems of banks and payment institutions affiliated with PagoPA. Are here:

To register you need the tax code, the explicit indication of the electronic payment instruments that you intend to use and do not forget to indicate the Iban to receive the cashback.

Does it work without contact? (Yes, there were problems)

PagoPA, the company that runs the IO app, also noted, as many users reported on social media and to PagoPa’s customer service, that contactless payments were not recorded in the app. By January, the issues should be fully resolved. However, to date, to ensure that the payment is registered, it is necessary to insert the card in the Pos and enter the PIN. Apparently it happens if there are multiple payment circuits on the payment cards.

What purchases are valid for reimbursement?

All purchases of goods and services such as groceries, clothing, medical bills, medicines, restaurant payments, full gasoline are valid. But also the accounts of craftsmen and professionals (mechanics, tire specialists, electricians, plumbers, engineers); household appliances and consumer electronics; hairdressers and personal care services. In case of doubt, to verify that the payment is valid for cash back purposes, you can ask the merchant if the payment circuit you are using is included in the cashless program. Online purchases are not valid. Merchants do not need special tools: it is the POS that records the payments that are combined to accumulate the cashback. So far Pagobancomat, American Express, Poste Italiane, Axepta BNL, Banca Sella, Bancomat Pay, Iccrea, Nexi, Satispay and UniCredit have joined. It may take up to three days before you see the refund produced for the last purchase made.
