The story of Iacopo Melio from the Covid department: «The fear of dying returns. Let’s be careful: the ambulances don’t stop screaming here “

“It’s two in the morning and it seems that hell has descended here, in department 5A3 in San Giuseppe di Empoli.” Thus began the Christmas letter that, this year, the 28-year-old Knight of Merit and new councilor for the Tuscany Region wrote to Italians asking them to “be careful” with the Coronavirus. Iacopo Melio was found to be infected in mid-December after a double swab. He is hospitalized and kept under close observation. He himself, through his personal Facebook page, publishes updates on his health: “My situation is stable but not yet safe, I will stay in the hospital as long as necessary to be more relaxed.”

In the letter published on December 25 by The Republic, Melio describes in detail what happens in the Covid departments.

A gentleman is hallucinating and delirious against the ceiling, talking to someone upstairs; another blasphemy in dialect, and then there are those who complain or ask for help invoking Mary; who coughs continuously without being able to speak, while someone is brought to resuscitation because something is wrong.

The regional councilor’s story becomes more intimate: Melio talks about his state of mind, probably common to anyone who is hospitalized due to Covid-19.

And then there is me who is afraid of dying. I have had that fear for a year, or rather with each bronchitis, but now it has reached its peak. So I try not to think about it but think about it anyway, because the cough has subsided but not the worst thoughts. That is why I write these lines in my phone notes, out of urgency and necessity as I always do: even now that everything seems impossible, distant and confusing. All work and life projects, family and friendship projects, disappeared under the weight that crushes my chest, unable to expand, between ribs and vertebrae that catch fire.

In closing, Melio addresses the deniers and those who simply underestimate the dangers of Sars-CoV-2:

The sea of skepticism does not stop, on the contrary it spills through me and who I am: “If Iacopo got sick he hadn’t been out since February … If his parents who have always been careful have infected him … So all that comes to us. Required, all emergency shutdown generalized and closures of the premises, the masks to wear and the hygiene regulations imposed … They are useless or ineffective ”-and he concludes-. Outside, the ambulances don’t stop screaming. That is why I write, because closing your eyes here is impossible: it’s two in the morning and hell has already fallen. We don’t stop thinking about it, we don’t stop and we are careful.
