The Covid school, the mask, the ventilation and the arrangement of the desks can be a weapon to curb the virus

These are certainly not absolute novelties, but a simulation confirms that to stop the covid at school we must first focus on three available weapons: the mask, the ventilation of the premises and the arrangement of the desks.

This is the research that experts from Dassault systèmes, which used computational fluid dynamics simulation solutions to study the effects of three factors that can potentially slow the spread of the virus and offer greater security, reports Il Sole 24 Ore.

Mask

Let’s start with the mask: the simulation of the experts has in fact demonstrated the importance of the masks in the school, which turns out to be the first tool to fight the virus. Some schools, however, do not require students to wear a mask, and even where appropriate, students are required to remove it for lunch.

The problem arises from the fact that children may not put it back on quickly enough after eating and at other times they may take it off or use it incorrectly. In these cases, the simulation can help to understand the spread of the virus in the air and therefore to take countermeasures to mitigate the risks, for example, by changing the configuration of the ventilation system.

Ventilation

But a key role according to the study by Dassault Systèmes experts is played by classroom ventilation: A good ventilation system can push droplets out of the classroom before they settle on surfaces or are inhaled by students and teachers. It can also help to minimize areas with high concentration of droplets, associated with greater risks of contagion.

The simulation showed that in a typical classroom with natural ventilation, that is, with open windows and a slight breeze, the 14% the drops leave the room in a minute. The percentage rises to twenty% when you use side suction fans and to 22% with aspirations placed in the center of the room.

We remember that these days, the deputy of the League, Rossano Sasso, announces that it has presented an agenda to the Chamber to commit the government to evaluate the opportunity to equip all schools with controlled mechanical ventilation systems as quickly as possible.

Layout of desks and number of students

And finally, the layout of the desks and the maximum number of students per classroom: well, the simulation of the experts showed that the optimal solution is one that consists of 20 students per class.

Dassault Systèmes experts conclude that the optimal situation to curb the virus is a room with 20 students, organized according to the simulation results, with central fans on and with the students who wear More expensive.
