Bologna, December 23, 2020 – It will be awhite Christmas‘- in line with the most exquisite tradition of festivals – what we are about to experience, at least in a part of our region. According to the forecast formulated by observers from Arpae (Regional Agency for Prevention, Energy and Environment), in fact, the last week of 2020 will definitely be marked by intense cold: one more reason to hide in the house and comply with the restrictions of the now infamous’Christmas decree‘. But, what will be, in the coming days, the areas that will awaken under the picturesque white blanket? We asked Alessandro donati, Arpae’s climate expert.
Donati, what should we expect for tomorrow, Christmas Eve?
“Until tomorrow, the meteorological situation will not undergo noticeable changes: clouds and temporary clearings will alternate in the skies of the region, while weak rains are expected only in the Emilian Apennines. Temperatures will remain mild and well above the average for the period: the maximum will reach 18 ° C between the Bologna and Romagna regions, due to the winds coming from the southwest.
But on Friday the 25th everything changes: Santa’s sleighs will bring the dreaded ‘arctic sweep’.
«The whole territory will be hit by an irruption of cold air, coming directly from the North Pole. During the day, the rains will wet the entire region, while heavy snowfall (with accumulations of up to 20 – 30 cm) will be concentrated in the area between the Reggio and Romagna Apennines ”.
Is there no snow on the plains?
“No: for now our models predict that, on the afternoon of the 25th, the snow level will drop to a maximum of 300-400 meters. Therefore, the low hill areas will be dressed in white. ‘
The cold Bora wind will contribute to aggravating the feeling of cold.
“From the afternoon of the 25th, the currents will turn from the north and cause a rapid increase in the movement of the waves on the coast of Romagna.”
Thus we come to December 26.
«Santo Stefano will grant a respite: except for some residual morning rainfall in Romagna, the 26th will be a very beautiful and sunny day, but very cold. Minimum temperatures will not go above zero in the Emilia sector, while in the Romagna sector they will touch 5 °. The maximums will be everywhere around 7 ° ».
For Sunday 27, however, a new deterioration is expected.
«A worsening preceded by the general drop in temperatures: on Sunday, the Emilia sector will wake up with lows around -7 ° and in Romagna it will not exceed zero; the maximum values, on the contrary, will be 2 ° in Emilia and 5-7 ° in Romagna. At night, the riots will bring rains to the western sector, between Piacenza and Modena. The cities of Parma and Piacenza will see the snow again ”.
How long will it last?
“On Monday the 28th it will rain everywhere and the temperatures will start to rise rapidly. River basins and waterways will need to be monitored as this could increase the risk of flooding. The rains will persist even on Tuesday 29. The last part of the year, in short, will be marked by a decidedly winter weather.
Wind weather warning
The regional Civil Protection has issued aweather warning for wind valid from 12 today until midnight on December 25: yellow (minor) in the provinces of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia and Modena; rossa (maximum attention) for December 24 in Parma, Modena and Reggio Emilia; orange (medium size) in Piacenza, Parma, Bologna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini.
In fact, since this afternoon, Wednesday December 23th, a increased ventilation of the southwest that will acquire special intensity (moderate storm) in the mountain ranges of the central-western Apennines. During the night and the next day, Thursday Dec. 24, further intensification (strong storm with temporarily higher intensity gusts) is expected and will tend to affect the central-western reliefs and foothills in the early part of the day, before moving towards the eastern Apennines and attenuating in the west. In the Apennines, rainfall, even convective, is expected with weak or modest cumulative range values.
