Toro News is pleased to present the column of prof. Marcello Tirrito, esteemed professional coach who has just finished his work experience in the youth sector of Torino FC. On a weekly basis, Marcello will analyze the events in Turin from the point of view of athletic training and physical condition, thus giving us an extra angle of vision to interpret reality.

Soccer is not a muted and closed activity. Soccer evolves by following and “being pursued” by the evolution and advancement of sports sciences, a scientific sector that deals with studying the evolution of training and always proposing new and interesting methods that are capable of helping athletes to improve their performance . A recurring phrase in the football scene is the following: “to win you have to run.” This concept has been understood since the 1970s, when the legendary Holland brought to the world of football, in addition to the famous “pressure” (yes, he himself, who gave us our last great joy in 76), also the figure of the physical trainer and sports psychologist. Since those years, soccer has been increasingly “typified” towards the development of appreciable muscle mass, the speed of the game has increased, as has the ability to run at high intensity, to jump up in aerial duels, to kick stronger and so on. Today the physical aspect has assumed a fundamental importance when determining the level of the player and, as a whole, of the team. In fact, aerobic fitness and the ability to repeat more and more high-intensity efforts over time are an increasingly characteristic factor in sports such as football, where it is the discipline itself that requires continuous acceleration, deceleration and changes of direction without losing technical quality. -tactic. In this scenario, the HIIT method has come into force for some years as a means of training to meet the needs of current football.

High (very high) intensity training involves physical work of higher quality than normal power and intensity, to clarify the concept, an unsustainable effort must be made for the required time, alternating with a period of pause, which can be performed in jogging or full form.
Science, therefore, helps a lot in the development of muscular performance, the latter could be a means to determine the positive final result.
What if our First Team used it too?
The lunch match against Bologna gave a brief hope of rebirth for the Bull. Unfortunately a draw has come, it is not a result that bodes well, but a point better than nothing.
That said, our team fired by all means at their fingertips, trying not to sink like a drifting ship, but rather in calm waters …
Unfortunately, the Taurus still has a load of previous seasons.
Analyzing the race, a good running ability is manifested; unfortunately, I have no data in hand, but from what I saw, it was one step less than Bologna.
Generally, when these situations are seen, the managed workload is diverted towards muscle strength work, which can momentarily make the equipment appear “slow” (data in hand surely is not). But this condition creates a long-term positive response in athletes.
Let’s make a metaphor; We imagine footballers as cars, to satisfy excellent performance it is necessary to have an efficiency of all components: wheels, transmission, type of gasoline, etc .; and you definitely need a good driver.
All these peculiarities can be reversed in the real activity of a footballer that together will make our athlete can run more after the Christmas holidays!
The planning of training in this phase (according to the science of training), called transition, will be reserved for the development of maximum strength, with the positive consequences mentioned above.
In addition, in the transition phase, it is also possible to remember that general aerobic “fitness”, that is, the resistance, which will be necessary to sustain a high intensity work when the championship knocks on the door.
In the next matches I will speak directly and in depth about the athletic characteristics of the modern player and the “variable” linked to the risk of injury. Too bad for Bonazzoli …

Turin professional athletics coach and Uefa B licensed soccer coach with twenty years of experience as a personal trainer, specialized in re-athletics and functional training, I worked until June 2020 in the youth sector of Torino FC.
