It will be a different Christmas. One of the rites of the Italian tradition this year changes profoundly. The emergency of the coronavirus and the government repression dictated by the dpcm of December 3 and the Christmas decree – 172/2020 of December 18 – require sobriety. And they cancel the classic festive tables, during Christmas dinner or lunch on December 25. The rules are entrusted to the common sense of the citizens: the government has not been able to express prohibitions on what happens in private homes, but has recommended sitting at the table with as few diners as possible who do not live together. You eat at home, with friends or family, because the restaurants are closed. Here is a kind of decalogue to sit at a table with family or friends.
1. Self-certification in hand
Even on Christmas day, to move between 5 and 22, a self-certification is required, which must be completed in case of control by the police. During the day the dpcm asks from 5 to 22 not to travel by public or private transport, except for work, necessity or health reasons.

2. Guests: add up to two seats at the table
The decree-law requires the transfer to a single private home, in the same region, once a day, in a period of time between 5 and 22 (therefore before midnight) and within the limits of two people, in addition to those who already live together. The two guests can be accompanied by children under 14 years of age over whom they exercise parental authority and disabled or non-self-sufficient people who live together.
2. Scheduled dinner: everyone at home before 10 pm
Midnight can only be spent together if they later spend the night or wait until 5 on December 25 to go home. In fact, on December 24th dinner will be scheduled: at 10 pm everyone will be home. The family unit in coexistence can have a maximum of two guests who do not live together, plus underage children or people with disabilities.
3. Only within your region
There are a number of regulatory provisions that must be respected, starting with the prohibition of moving outside your region. Displacements between regions, except for proven work needs or situations of need or for health reasons, are already prohibited as of Monday 21, according to the dpcm of December 3. The government’s frequently asked questions have specified that on the 24th and 25th it is also possible to move to other municipalities in your region.
