because the VAR did not intervene

Matchday 14 of Serie A left a historic goal as a dowry. That of Rafael Leao in Sassuolo v AC Milan, the fastest ever achieved in the history of the Italian championship: six seconds and cents from the start, about two seconds faster than the previous record (set by Paolo Poggi in 2001). An ultra-fast action by the Rossoneri, who were spoiled by an irregularity after the game.

At the moment of kick-off Rafael Leao is clearly beyond the middle line.. Rule 8 of the soccer rules describes the procedures for kick-off and establishes the procedure to be followed:

For each kickoff – it reads – all players, except the one who executes it, must be in their own half of the court“And in case of any violation of the established rules”,kick-off must be repeated“.

The referee Mariani did not notice the irregular position of Rafael Leao at the moment of the service and let the action continue, which followed a pattern prepared in training – as coach Pioli admitted – and ended with the Portuguese footballer’s goal. But why didn’t the VAR intervene in support of the race director to report the infraction? Why game start and restart are not among the cases that may be subject to VAR review, as explained by former referee Luca Marelli.

The advantage that Milan has acquired over the current level of play is almost irrelevant, since we are talking about the development of a kick-off, dozens of meters from the rival goal and with the entire opposing team in defense. A situation that occurs very frequently, almost in all matches. But according to the regulations, Rafael Leao’s goal was to annul it.
