The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, I speak of “Personal victory” just a few hours ago, when leaving the court after being also acquitted on appeal.
His relieved tone, however, spared no comment for his detractors and accusers. invited to reflect and do it starting from his own party, the 5-star Movement:
“It is a victory for me and my staff, as well as for all those who have been close to me in these four long years of political but not human solitude. I think there are many that must be reflected, also and above all inside the M5“,
the mayor said a few minutes after the sentence.
The acquittal on appeal is, in fact, a confirmation of the sentence already handed down in the first instance, within the framework of the so-called appointment consultation. So let’s see in detail what it is and what Virginia Raggi was accused of.
Virginia Raggi acquitted: what were the charges?
Virginia Raggi was acquitted on appeal today, with a sentence that confirmed what had already been concluded in first grade.
The accusation was directed at alleged false statements of the mayor under the appointment of Renato Marra, brother of Raffaele Marra, at that time very close to Raggi in his daily work in the capital.
The mayor knowingly gave false information to the anti-corruption officer of the municipality of Rome, Maria Rosa Turchi. All in favor the inclusion of Renato Marra at the head of the Tourism Directorate, with a significant salary increase.
This would have happened – it is the thesis of the prosecution – by the impulse of the same Raffaele Marra, which would have taken advantage of its proximity to the Mayor to facilitate the circumstance thanks to favorable procedures.
In particular, it was aimed at different private conversations from which excerpts of dialogues were taken that could suggest direct involvement. But what was already sentenced at the end of the first degree, in the fall of 2018, was in fact confirmed in the morning with the acquittal.
When leaving the court, a few minutes after the sentence, the mayor did not spare various arrows to his detractors, speaking of “My victory” and calling not to get on the winner’s bandwagon now:
“Now it is too easy to try to get on the winner’s bandwagon with words of circumstance after years of silence. Those who have a clear conscience should not be offended by these words, but many others, at least today, have the decency to keep silent ”.
Already in early December, the mayor had given a strong and in many ways controversial signal – also given the guidelines of her own party – announcing her intention to run for a second term in 2021 administrative elections even if a conviction had come for her.
