He terrorized Italy with his ruthless and seemingly random killings: A serial killer who also hit trains, chose the victims based on circumstances, and killed them mercilessly. Donato Libra, ‘the train monster’ or ‘the prostitute killer’ as the criminal literature brought it back to the news, died of Covid in Due Palazzidi Padua prison. Libra was serving 13 life sentences for seventeen murders and 16 years for an attempted murder: crimes committed between 1997 and 1998 between Liguria and Piedmont. Weight scale, born in Potenza in 1951, was arrested in 1998 betrayed by the car used for some of his trips. He served the first years in prison in the Marassi prison in Genoa, before being transferred to Padua in later years. In the Libra cell, although he has never regretted the murders, he began a path that led him to obtain a diploma and start studying to graduate. A behavior that also led him to obtain a permit to leave prison in 2017 or after 20 years of detention: he was superhunted to the grave of his parents in Nizza Monferrato (Asti).
Instead, he was denied further permission because he was considered a “still dangerous” subject. Weight scale he had asked the Padua Supervisory Court to visit an eight-year-old boy with Down syndrome, to whom he had decided to donate part of his pension. But the magistrates denied the possibility on the grounds that he had never repented of his crimes, believing that he had been “possessed” by illness in the years in which he had committed them. Furthermore, he had not successfully embarked on a path of psychological rehabilitation suggesting that he had resolved the “personality disorders” that afflicted him. A criminal career that Libra’s began with petty theft and robbery, punctuated by the habit of gambling and the assiduous frequenting of gambling dens. And indeed the first victims of Libra in 1997 are the gamblers, Giorgio Centanaro, suffocated, and Maurizio Parenti murdered with his wife.
Murders for robbery followed (the spouses Bruno Solari and Maria Luigia Pitto, owners of a goldsmith’s shop, and the money changers Luciano Marro and Enzo Gorni). It was also the turn of a watchman, Giangiorgio Canu, in revenge against the police. Then the long series of murdered prostitutes, a massacre from which a transsexual, Lorena, escaped, later decisive for the capture because she provided an identikit and a description of the black Mercedes. Then the qualitative leap in the escalation of terror: Libra begins to choose his victims on the trains at random and acting ferociously.
Betraying him was an almost innocent vice considering the character’s criminal caliber: it is avoiding paying the toll on the highway. The black Mercedes was denounced on several occasions and the police discovered a correspondence between the identikit of the occupant and that made by Lorena. Added to this was the DNA test: the serial killer, one of the most ruthless in Italy’s criminal history, was arrested on May 6, 1998. Within days he confessed to all the murders.
