Covid, Macron’s contagion threatens world leaders

Macron tested positive for Covid. The announcement came this morning from the Elysee: the French president, who will turn 43 on December 21, was tested as soon as “the first symptoms” appeared. Therefore, he was placed in solitary confinement for seven days, as established by health protocols. However, given his hyperactivity, he confirmed today’s commitments: he will participate in two official events, already planned, but at a distance. That hyperactivism, however, now worries in hindsight: Macron, a true top, in recent days had never stopped, sounding the usual vortex of encounters.

Covid, French Prime Minister Castex: “In France vaccines since the last week of December”

All the more so since it is not clear what the “symptoms” to which the Elysee refers. In any case, they suggest that the president had been infected for some time. When symptoms appear, the person has been contaminated for an average of five days and contagious for at least two. And so an alert was immediately activated around Macron, which also affects foreign personalities. Yesterday, the French president had lunch at the Elysee with the Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa. You have not yet decided what to do: you are waiting for the test result. As for Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish prime minister, and the Belgian Charles Michel, president of the European Council, although not obliged, they decided to put themselves in preventive isolation for seven days. They had lunch with Macron on Monday, like Ursula Von der Leyen, who has yet to make any announcements about it. It is unclear if Macron was already contagious during the European Council last Thursday and Friday, when he also saw Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Coming to his closest circle, his wife Brigitte Macron, 67, who last tested negative but on Tuesday, is obviously in solitary confinement. Prime Minister Jean Castex also tested negative this morning, but was kept in pre-trial isolation for seven days. Precisely today he had to illustrate the national anti-Covid vaccination plan to Parliament: the Minister of Health Olivier Véran will replace him. Macron had chaired a Council of Ministers yesterday. Everyone present wore a mask and respected the distance, but there is always a margin of risk. Other politicians Macron met recently have quarantined themselves, such as Christophe Castaner, leader of the group of deputies from the République en Marche in the National Assembly. On Monday, Macron attended a ceremony related to the Rugby World Cup 2023, to be held in France. And there he met, among others, the fashion designer Christian Louboutin and the actor Jean Dujardin.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, France had come out of confinement. The curfew remains in place from 8:00 p.m. For now, the contagion curve remains flat in the country: it is not going down, but it is not going up either. Yesterday the new positive cases were 17,615 and 292 deaths.
